Come Visit The World Famous Atlantic City Boardwalk |The Very First Boardwalk In The U.S.!

The famous Jersey Shore attraction was also the very first and longest boardwalk to be built in the country. Originally it spanned over 7 miles but now it reaches a little over four miles long and five feet wide. The wooded path is ideal for early morning biking, window shopping, wandering aimlessly, or reevaluating life choices after losing several hundred dollars gambling. The restaurants, casinos, and amusement centers crowding the promenade might overwhelm you, but at least you know you've got options! Hop on the tram car for a ride from one end to the boardwalk to the other to avoid walking the distance or for when the little are just too tired. And remember, the beach is free! So feel free to gamble away all your cash because you won't need it to access the sandy shores and salty sea.

The beach in Atlantic City, NJ is something truly breathtaking. You can easily spend a day sunbathing in the sand, swimming in the ocean and taking part in the fun boardwalk activities that are great for people of every age.

The Remarkable World Of The Atlantic City Boardwalk | The Complete History & Fascinating Things to Do

Atlantic City is located on the southeastern side of New Jersey, U.S.A., near the Atlantic Ocean.

In the past, Delaware Indians inhabited that area before the English settlers showed up towards the latter half of the 1670s.

In the current world setting, Atlantic City is known as the resort city of New Jersey.

It is known for its beaches, boardwalk, and casinos.

History of The Atlantic City Boardwalk

The famous boardwalk of Atlantic City is located on New Jersey’s Absecon Island.

It was America's first-ever boardwalk and was developed during the 19th century.

It was turned into a resort and it quickly became very popular.

Thanks to its well-known beaches, it turned into the U.S's most visited holiday destination for more than a century.

It was on June 26th, 1870, when the Atlantic City Boardwalk was opened as a temporary structure that was put up during that summer.

It was the United States' first boardwalk

The Atlantic City boardwalk begins from the Absecon Inlet which is located in the north and goes along the beach southwest of the city limit, four miles away, and then continues on one and a half mile into Ventnor City.

Visitors can find everything on the boardwalk, from hotels and casinos to amusement parks and retail stores.

Some of the popular attractions at the boardwalk are House of Blues, the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum, and the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall arena.

During Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the boardwalk’s northern part that faced Absecon Inlet went through some major destruction.

Some of the oceanfront areas of the boardwalk that were directly in front of the casinos of Atlantic City ended up surviving the storm and only suffered minimal damage.

The different piers overtime

Over the years, the Atlantic City Boardwalk has had its fair share of piers.

Towards the beginning, there was the Ocean Pier, which was constructed during the year 1882.

However, it wasn’t long before that pier was demolished and another pier was built in its place.

This new pier was called Steel Pier and it was opened in 1898. Now, it is known as the famous Amusement Pier, which is right across from the popular Hard Rock Casino.

In 1903, a new pier by the name of ‘Young's Million Dollar Pier’ was opened by Captain John Lake Young.

He also built a marble mansion on the seaward side that contained a formal garden.

The landscaping and lighting were done by Thomas Edison, who was Young’s close friend at that time.

This new pier was the largest amusement pier in Atlantic City during that time.

In the 1980s, the Young's The Million Dollar Pier was renovated into a shopping mall, called ‘Shops on Ocean One.’

However, once again in 2006, this mall was bought and renovated into a new place, which was then called "The Pier Shops at Caesars."

In the year 2015, that place was renamed as ‘Playground Pier.’

Moreover, the Garden Pier, which was across from the Revel Atlantic City, consisted of a movie theater once. That place is now known as the Atlantic City Historical Museum.

There were two more piers

One was known as the Steeplechase Pier which was actually an amusement pier.

The second one was a Heinz 57-owned pier called the Heinz Pier.

During the Great Atlantic Hurricane in 1944, both of these piers were badly destroyed.

The Steeplechase Pier was re-built once again after the hurricane and it went on to see the casino era.

Today, the Steel Pier honors the reconstructed pier by having a "Steeplechase Pier Heliport."

Movies Shot In Atlantic City

There was a time when Atlantic City was called the "World’s Playground" between the 1920s and the 1960s.

During this time, several movies would reference Atlantic City, like "Citizen Kane." In the 1941 movie "Citizen Kane", a flashback scene is set in Atlantic City.

Another movie that was shot partially in Atlantic City was "Three Little Girls In Blue" in the year 1946. The movie even featured a song called "On the Boardwalk (in Atlantic City)."

The movie "Atlantic City", which was released in 1944, was a musical that showed how this place turned into a well-known resort.

A 1957 movie called "The Burglar" was set in Atlantic City as well and it starred Jayne Mansfield.

The 1935 movie "Convention Girl", which is also known as ‘Atlantic City Romance,’ shows the footage of the Atlantic City Boardwalk during that time, which included acrobats, crowded beaches, the Diving Horse of Steel Pier, and the well-known wicker rolling chairs.

Two other great films that were shot there were the 1980 gangster movie "Atlantic City" and the 1972 film depicting con men in Atlantic City "The King of Marvin Gardens." Both of these movies showed the city on the brink of falling.

Another movie that was shot in Atlantic City was called "Duane Hopwood". It starred David Schwimmer and was released in 2005.

Moreover, numerous movies that showcased a gambling theme would use Atlantic City as their background. For instance, the George Clooney hit "Ocean’s Eleven," which was released in 2001, and "Rounders," which starred Matt Damon was released in 1998.

Another very famous money-related movie was filmed in Atlantic City by the name of "The Color Of Money," which starred Tom Cruise.

Other movies include "Snake Eyes," which starred Nicolas Cage and was released in 1998. "The Bounty Hunter" which starred Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler filmed a lot of their scenes in Atlantic City. And "The Oranges" which starred Hugh Laurie was released in 2012 and had several of its scenes filmed in Atlantic City.
