Staying Safe at New Jersey Waterparks

When it comes to spending time at one of NJ’s most thrilling water parks, sometimes the fun takes control and we forget about how important it is to stay safe while we are cooling off. Be sure to follow the few tips below to ensure that your water park visit is both safe and fun the entire time!

Always wear sunscreen! Make sure to reapply sunscreen after some time as the label suggests. Use an SPF that is high enough to effectively block the sun (usually 30+ is good), and make sure the sunscreen you are using is water resistant! Do not forget about your face and lips. Wear a hat to protect your head.

Watch the little ones. We all know that water can be extremely dangerous for children. Make sure to equip them with the necessary life vests or floaties if they are not experienced swimmers. Also never take your eyes off children—even if they do know how to swim! All of New Jersey’s water parks employ lifeguards, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Stay hydrated! Make sure you are drinking plenty of water while you enjoy some fun in the sun. While soda, juice, or alcoholic beverages might sound good, the best thing to put in your body on a hot day is water. This goes for both indoor and outdoor waterparks! You might forget to hydrate when having fun in one of New Jersey's indoor water parks, but remember that this is still extremely important even when the sun is not beating down on you.

Listen to the lifeguards and employees. Many people (and especially kids) seem to feel invincible around the water. Always make sure to listen to the direction of park employees. This means if they say no diving or jumping, do not dive or jump! Staying alert and following directions can be a life-or-death decision.

The History of water parks in NJ

The history of water parks in New Jersey is a fun and fascinating one. Here's a brief overview:

The first water park in New Jersey was Action Park, which opened in the 1970s in Vernon, NJ. It quickly became known for its very innovative, thrilling and sometimes dangerous rides, earning the nickname "Traction Park." The park eventually closed in 1996 due to financial difficulties and safety concerns. Subsequently, in 2020, a documentary was made called "Class Action Park" which examines the true dangers and excitng lore of the park. I personally have been injured at this park several times.

In the 1980s and 1990s, more water parks began popping up around the state, including Keansburg Amusement Park's water park and Casino Pier's Breakwater Beach Waterpark.

In the 2000s, water parks became even more popular in New Jersey, with the opening of Big Kahuna's Water Park in West Berlin and other smaller parks throughout the state.

Today, water parks are a staple of summer fun in New Jersey, attracting visitors from near and far!
