The History of Comedy in NJ

The clean comedy era of America started in the 1920s by the hand of big star Will Rogers, who was initially a Vaudeville performer.

The first "stand up" comedian in America was Frank Fay. He was wildly popular as a "master of ceremonies" at the Palace Theater in New York during the Vaudeville era.

"Stand-up comedy is a comic style in which a comedian performs in front of a live audience, usually speaking directly to them." According to Wikipedia.

And New Jersey, too, has a long back history of comedy. But the 1980s was the golden age of New Jersey comedy, and the Banana Comedy Club was the pioneer of that.

"There was a huge boom back then, and going to comedy clubs was the thing to do," says Harlan Jamison. He founded the Bananas Comedy Club in Hasbrouck Heights in 1988 with his wife, Arlene.

The Bananas Comedy Club are two venues for stand-up comedy: the first, founded in 1986 in Poughkeepsie, New York, and the second, opened in 1988 in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey.

Top comedians in the business have stopped by throughout the years including Jackie Mason, Rita Rudner, Jamie Foxx, Brian Regan, Jeff Dunham, Sinbad, Caroline Rhea, Pat Cooper, Paul Reiser, Tommy Davidson, Rich Vos, John Pinette, Jim Breuer, Robert Klein, Patrice O'Neal, Bobcat Goldthwait, Glen and sidekick Barbara and many more.

Both clubs are still open to this day.

Not only did celebrities grace the stage of the New Jersey clubs, but many little-known stand-up artists who would soon become international stars were playing stages from Hasbrouck Heights to Atlantic City.

Some of them are - Rosie O'Donnell, Andrew Dice Clay, Tim Allen, Sam Kinison, Chris Rock, and of course, Seinfeld.

Those days in the business of comedy have been remembered as a pinnacle of stand-up's popularity. And because of this popularity, many clubs have sprung up that time.
