East Point Lighthouse HeislervilleEast Point Lighthouse
Where the Maurice River meets the Delaware Bay, southwest of Heislerville
902-357-2106
Although numerous lighthouses once stood along the edge of the Delaware Bay, East Point is the last one remaining on the Jersey side. In fact, it is the second oldest lighthouse standing in New Jersey (only the Sandy Hook Lighthouse of 1764 is older). The lantern room offers a panoramic view of the surrounding land and water and is a favorite subject of photographers and painters alike. Throughout the years its guiding light has shown fisherman, oystermen, and recreational boaters the way into the mouth of the Maurice River.

It is under restoration by the Maurice River Historical Society.

This had some history!

Barnegat Lighthouse Long Beach Island NJBarnegat Lighthouse
West 17th Street, Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island, NJ
609-494-2016

There are 217 steps that lead to the light. From there you can see a long ways on a clear day. If you are familiar with this area of the Jersey shore and have never seen the area from up high, the view from the lighthouse will be even more special. In all areas of the lighthouse you will find interpretive signs that discuss the history and role of lighthouses, in addition to specific details about the Barnegat Lighthouse itself.

The lighthouse is open (weather permitting) every day from April 1 through October 31, 9 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. From April 1 through October 31 it is open from 9 AM to 3:30 PM, Wednesday through Sunday.

There is a long list of folks that should not climb the lighthouse. Be sure you are Ok with the strenuous nature of the climb. If you cannot or do not want to walk to the top you can still see the view from cameras.

It's a great place to visit!

Sea Girt Lighthouse Sea Girt NJSea Girt Lighthouse
9 Ocean Ave., Sea Girt, NJ
732-974-0514
It would be the last live-in lighthouse built in the United States.
In September of 1934, this unique two-story, brick lighthouse with its flashing red light, gave aid to the passengers and crew of a luxury ocean liner who had abandoned ship when fire had engulfed the ship.  Later, during World War II, the lighthouse was used as headquarters for the Coast Guard's beach patrols on the lookout for German U-boats.

With the many contributions of period furnishings, paintings, historic maps, local photographs, and lighthouse memorabilia, the Sea Girt Lighthouse has become almost a museum.

Girt Lighthouse is open April through November on Sundays between 2 and 4 p.m.

Cool piece of history!

Southern NJ

Sandy Hook Lighthouse Highlands NJSandy Hook Lighthouse
26 Lawson Ln, Highlands, NJ
732-708-9010
The tall, white lighthouse at Sandy Hook is the oldest standing light tower in the United States. The tall lighthouse on the low-lying sandy spit was easily seen by mariners, but being the only structure of any height for several miles, it apparently was also susceptible to lightning strikes.
In its bicentennial year, Sandy Hook Light was designated a National Historic Landmark, and a commemorative plaque was mounted on the tower as part of a celebration held at the site. Ownership of the lighthouse was transferred to the National Park Service in 1996.
Originally standing 500 feet from the tip of the hook, Sandy Hook Lighthouse is now over a mile and a half away.

Sandy Hook looks like a fun place to go!
