Students and adults often read about historic figures such as George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, Alexander Hamilton and James Monroe. However, to know that each and every one of those famous people visited The Hermitage during the course of the Revolutionary War helps bring history to life!

Located on almost five acres of shady property in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, it is believed that the original structure was built around 1760. The Hermitage was then renovated in 1847 by architect William H. Ranlett, and it is an outstanding example of the Gothic Revival Style. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark.

There is much to be learned about life in a bygone era while touring The Hermitage. Countless hours of hard work and loving care have restored the interior to the way it looked in the 1890’s, and many of the items are original to the home.

The Hermitage was bequeathed to the State of New Jersey by its last owner, Mary Elizabeth Rosencrantz, who passed away in 1970. The Friends of the Hermitage nonprofit corporation was founded in 1972 to restore and maintain the integrity of this historic site.

Tour guides give a brief talk concerning the history of The Hermitage as they point out many interesting details concerning the décor and the former residents. Both guides and staff are knowledgeable, helpful and friendly, so do not hesitate to ask questions.

The Hermitage Education and Conference Center, on the left side of the property, is where the tours begin, and where the offices and staff are located.

Tours: Wednesday - Sunday at 1:15, 2:15, and 3:15 p.m.
Both The Hermitage and the offices are closed on all legal holidays as well as on the day after Thanksgiving.

Please note that the office hours are different from the tour hours. The Hermitage offices are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

• Reservations are not required for groups of fewer than 10 people; please call the office for larger groups. Group discounts are available.

• Accessibility is limited for tours and some events. If you require special assistance, please call in advance for accommodations.

Directions to the Hermitage Museum in Ho-Ho-Kus NJ

From Northern NJ:
Take Route 17 (north or south) to the Hollywood Avenue exit. Bear left after exiting and take Hollywood Avenue west to Franklin Turnpike, turn right onto North Franklin Turnpike and go 1/2 mile to The Hermitage on the left. Parking at the rear of the property.

Garden State Parkway
Take exit 165, go west 1/3 mile on Ridgewood Ave. to Route 17 North on right. Follow the directions above.

New Jersey Turnpike
Take Exit 16W to Route 3 West, exit at Route 17 North and follow directions for Route 17.

Route 287 to Route 208 South.
Exit on Ewing Avenue and turn left onto Route 502 E. Follow Route 502 E. right at the traffic light (Franklin Avenue). Franklin Avenue becomes Wyckoff Avenue. Turn right onto Franklin Turnpike in Waldwick. The Hermitage is on your right. Parking at the rear of the property.

From New York City:
Take the George Washington Bridge to Route 4 West to Route 17 North, follow directions for Route 17.

By Train:
Take the New Jersey Transit Bergen County/Main Line to Waldwick Station. Walk east 2 blocks. Turn right on Franklin Turnpike and go south about 3 blocks. The Hermitage is on the right.
